Copper Restaurant

Just off the diamond in the centre of Warrenpoint, Neil Bradley and Sarah Meaney’s appealing restaurant lies behind a smart understated façade. Inside, there’s a bar and a fine high-ceilinged dining room, with tables welcomingly set up with classic white linen and all the nice little touches that convey a quality feeling. Neil is an extremely strong advocate of local food: his fish is bought straight off the boat at Kilkeel Harbour, his herbs and vegetables are from Lurganconary Organic Farm at Kilkeel, and naturally reared beef and pork for the restaurant come from the nearby Narrow Water Castle Farm…thus the building blocks of good food are in place and, if you add the magic ingredient of seriously good cooking by a talented and dedicated chef, it is no surprise that this delightful restaurant should be on so many customers’ list of favourites. A range of imaginative but admirably concise set menus is offered (lunch, early dinner, vegetarian) as well as a more extensive à la carte; typically delicious summer offerings might include starters using vegetables, herbs and local fish in season such as fresh pea risotto with local ham & mint or spiced mackerel fillets with orange & rhubarb salad, possibly followed by a great meat dish like char grilled Narrow Water sirloin with dauphinoise potatoes & chili butter, or cumin roast lamb with potato gnocchi & aubergine. WHAT do top chef Paul Rankin and the Copper Restaurant in Warrenpoint have in common? Answer: They both churn out exemplary melt-in-your-mouth cuisine, made more evident in the fact that the restaurant has recently been selected as one of five finalists in the local Food Hero 2008 competition.The competition is run by UKTV Food - Britain's only television channel dedicated solely to the love of food, which runs shows such as Market Kitchen, People's Cookbook, Rhodes Across India and, of course, Local Food Hero.Owned by chef Neil Bradley and manager Sarah Meaney, the Copper Restaurant is unique in that it aims to promote Northern Ireland produce and receives its naturally reared beef and pork from the nearby Narrow Water Castle Farm; all their fish from one fisherman from the local seaside town; their herbs and vegetables from Lurganconary Organic Farm in Kilkeel; their ice-cream from an award-winning Warrenpoint ice-cream maker and their oysters and mussels are also sourced locally. The duo are also part various organisations such as the Taste of Ulster organisation and the Mourne Initiative which aims to promote local food suppliers in Kilkeel, Newry, etc.Explaining how the nomination came about a shocked Neil explained: "One of our customers nominated us on the UKTV voting website. The website then collects hits and adds all the votes and the five restaurants with the most are put through to the final. “We only found out two weeks ago that we were selected as finalists."The winner of the Northern Ireland crown will secure a place in the grand final with the chance to win £40,000 and claim the Local Food Hero 2008 title. Handy Fish Cakes.....

I have pestered John until he gave me the recipe for fish cakes..... the great thing about these is that you can make them a few days before you need them then you can just whip them out and it looks like you have been slaving away for like hours....wow..... and kids love these, a great alternative to fish fingers.

This is what your fish cakes will look like before you breadcrumb them!

Fish Cakes..... serves 6-8

8oz salmon
20 oz cold mash potato
2 scallions – chopped
1 tblsp chives
1 tblsp tomato ketchup
1 tblsp grain mustard
1 egg, whisk gently and remove some for the egg wash
Salt & pepper
Bread crumbs
A little four

Method
Poach fish – cool & flake
Combine fish, herbs, ketchup, mustard, salt & pepper, mash and egg.
Divide into portions and shape.
Roll in flour, apply egg wash & bread crumbs and refrigerate until required.
When ready to be eaten panfry or deep fry until crisp on outside – finish in the oven

Oh yes.... when I'm cleaning the cafe windows I am deaf, I'm deaf most of the time but with that traffic it's worse so stop yelling "you missed a bit" I can't hear you....

The Newry Tourist Information Centre is now located in Bagenals Castle, Abbey Way, Newry....... The same place as Copper Cafe..... Please don't send people to the Town Hall anymore!! The staff there are very friendly and helpful and will look after you very well should you need any tourist information, I know cause I have heard them.

The sunshine was so lovely in the point today, we had the restaurant door open all day such was the great heat from the sun!! Over there is a picture of the view from the front door at sunset.
Will it still be good weather on our days off? (we will be closed 9th & 10th April) I don't mind that much really.... just havin a few days off will make the world a brighter place anyway, I might even take Neil out for dinner somewhere, tipage depending of course and if the car is still working!

Ahhhhhh.... how do you ever find stuff again after you have done the massive spring clean??
We have put things in the same place for a year now, during the dark winter nights we could find all the "stuff" without the need of light.... now, well, we took it all out, cleaned the shelves and decided to put it somewhere else, we just can't remember where that new place is!!!
I think it's the place that socks go!!
But at least the bar is much more tidy now!!!

Chinese New Year - Update

We have some decorations ready for Sundays celebration of the Chinese New Year!
The golden pigs head is already sitting on the bar full of sweeties & Fortune cookies.

In addition to the great choices on the menu on Sunday we will have a special starter of:

The week so far...the builders next door have gone away somewhere else!
We killed and cooked a haggis or two for our first Burns night, next year there will be more kilts and some dancing. We never did get to find out what was underneath that kilt.
I am banned from speaking in my Scottish accent cause I can't apparently.
I have decided that as the Chinese new year is on the same day as my birthday, (18th February so start getting my pressies in now), we will be doing some fun stuff in the restaurant that night!
Neil will have some special dishes on the go & I think we will put up some decorations!!
I've never had a Chinese new year before....I'm a bit excited

Tis the season is over..... ah well...Happy new year to every one and what better way to start than with free wine... Yes the emails have gone out to you all who entered the free meal competition.

It's almost over... we will be counting the hours till we no longer have to work and we can join in with the downing of Christmas spirits... Kims will be a large JD... I will have a large baileys... John is a scotch man.. Neil will have a beer...Julie likes white wine, sweet...Jill, I'm not too sure but by the rumors, well!!

Yes we have looked after your every whim and desire, within reason, we have worn the cute little Santa hats, we have cleaned up the mountains of confetti the singing Dubliners left behind ( I was going to walk around Warrenpoint with it in my holey pockets and pretend I was a fairy but Kim dropped it down by the dairy fridge), we have had 3 sing alongs, wrapped 100 Copper puddings, we have quite literally bled, been burnt, scalded and bruised... We have gone for 4 days without sitting down to eat, yet you our lovelys knew none of this cause being supremely good at what we do we never missed a beat!
So I would like to thank in no particular order, Naill for bring us sugar and caffeine to keep us going when it was just me and Kim on the floor, Julie who came the whole way from Manchester to help out, Reishma for the polishing of cutlery, Kim for not leaving my side, Naimh for the thoughts, our family's in advance for being so understanding when they yet again get no presses from us cause we haven't had time....if the shops would only stay open till 3am! John & Jill for the help, food & craic and my beloved Neil for being himself.

Copper will be closed the 24th, 25th & 26th of December due to the Copper crew resting!
We rock, you lot rock cause we had the best of craic with you, so from Copper....

Yes... I did dress Neils cat up as Santa, but it had to be done!
See Deborah did give us the most cute little cat Santa outfit possible.
Neil did say don't be dressing that cat up, he's confused enough as it is.
Eddy really wanted to.... I swear... there was very little catnip involved... and you can tell the USPCA all you like but they are just glad that they don't have to put up with his drolling anymore!
We are really getting into this Christmas spirit now... we have even added a few Christmas songs into the playlist in the restaurant!

Well I heard some disturbing news last night... there will not be any snow anymore at Christmas because of all this global warming, if you are lucky enough to have memories of playing in the snow when you where young then cherish them!
There is video somewhere ( hidden I am sure) of me and Kim out on Duke street screaming like two kids last year cause about 3 flakes of snow fell from the heavens... maybe that's why God stopped the snow, he couldn't listen to the screaming!
We are still putting up our decorations in the restaurant, it's not like we have that many but every time we start we get really busy, the Santa lights are up again though and this year I thought I would share them with everyone in the world who happens to walk down Duke Street in Warrenpoint. So if you walk past Copper Restaurant in Warrenpoint take a wee look in through the door and there will be the wee Santa lights sparkling at you from the bar beside the Christmas puddings. On the puddings point, Neil got spotted at the shop, a lady was staring at him then came over and said to him "do you work in copper" well I think he thought he had made it as super star chef but alas.... his bubble was popped when she said "do you have any Christmas puddings left for sale?" all she wanted was the pudding, not the chef.....I'm glad... I hate it when you are in lidl/sainsburys stocking up on junk food and people look in your basket and then say "look at the rubbish they are buying, you would think that with them having a restaurant they would eat like kings"
Ah yes, if there was a way for me to get Neil to cook me yummy scrummy Copper food at 1.30am at our house do you not think I would?.... no by the time we get home from work I have to eat cereal and wagon wheels and the odd frozen pizza if I'm really lucky (the last time we did that we fell asleep and the pizza got burnt so Neil won't cook pizza after midnight anymore).

Copper is 2 today and we have slight hangovers to prove it!! Even though more water fell from the heavens last night than I thought was possible we still had our wee party and it rocked!
Not like I have time to notice a hangover.. I've only got to try the haggis starter so far, and I'm supposed to be eating less meat..I have to say it was good.

This is our last day of normality.... at the end of service tonight we will be in Christmas mode.
the kitchen is frantically getting the new menu prep'd, I am sitting here just merrily typing at my computer drinking coffee even though I should be getting the decorations out of the attic, changing the menu, printing off the new menu, changing the website etc... but it's such a dramatic romantic Thursday outside I just can't find the will to do it!

Well there you go... I've been informed that John didn't read the intructions at all!
Neil taught him how to use the coffee machine and Neil reackons he tought himself how to use it by trial and ERROR, he did what men usually do.... kept trying till he got it right.
I suppose the chestnuts will be along the same vein, I reackon there has to be a better way of removing their skin but what would I know, I have 2 things going against me, 1:I'm a woman 2:I'm not a chef!
So yet again I have been evicted from the kitchen for getting in the way of our leader.

And they say that real men don't read them... not in this restaurant cause yesterday when we ran out of instant coffee John chef actually read the instructions on the real coffee in order to make himself a cup!! What ever next.... will they read maps.... has the world stopped turning.....
This time next month I will be in a pub with my Neil celebrating the festive season, it's only 5 more weekends away!! Ah yes.. the tradition of me & Neil getting lost in alcohol on Christmas eve lives on. It all started many years ago when we where living in Belfast, young and impoverished.
We would go up to our house mate Sineads Mums house and of course being the wife of Paddy Cashman it wasn't like you got offered tea or coffee... no it was "wine or beer". Every year it was the same... "no Susan... we really shouldn't drink any more... we have to go home to Newry... Neil has to cook the Christmas dinner tomorrow".
Then the phone calls would start... "where are you two, when are you coming home" etc.
And so when we would wake up on Christmas day in our house in Belfast... wondering why we weren't in Newry it was always Susan Cashmans fault, although to be fair one year it was the fault of Brain & Sharon.
Now since we have opened Copper we haven't been able to get to Belfast on Christmas eve, everyone thought that we would be sober on Christmas eve.... there could be the family get together thing. But no... it happened again, Christmas eve 2004, we had been invited to go to my brothers house. They rang at 7.30, we said we would be straight up, they rang again at 8pm... it was already too late!
So last year we didn't make any plans with anyone, we just went to the pub!
This year... we will be in the pub from about 5.30pm... that is unless, we fall into a bottle of wine over lunch... and where are we going for our Christmas dinner this year?

Lemon Snow

My Daddy always tells me not to eat yellow snow, it's a good tip! So you can understand the hesitation when the kitchen offers me what they have called yellow snow!!
They made lemon foam and froze it to make lemon snow.
Remeber when you where young and you ate snow and it just disapperead in your mouth.... this does just the same only it tastes of lemon.
I won't eat the yellow snow you find out side though.... that would be just stupid

Christmas will not start in Copper properly till the 24th December (cause that is when we will not be here, we will be off!).
On the 1st December we might put up some Christmas decorations!
At some point during December you might hear some Christmas carols being sung, only if you are really unlucky, by us!
The goose is only just starting to get fat so it can't be Christmas.......yet!
I hope this answers those questions, we aren't bah humbugs... we just don't want to spoil the surprise.

this is what happened to me today, I shall set the scene:
It's approx 4pm on a dull Thursday afternoon and I'm waiting patiently for my lunch to arrive so I get bored and decided that it would be a good idea to try to wear the killer heels again (every woman has a pair of these shoes! They are way too pointy & high to ever be worn never mind walked in.)
Anyway.. the shoes go on & I'm wobbling around the floor on them like a dork... they look fantastic when I stand still... when all of a sudden there is rather a lot of steam coming out of the kitchen - and this time it wasn't Neil blowing a gasket, rather the pipe from the combi ( a oven which uses steam as well as dry heat to cook)has come loose.
My dedication seems to know no bounds cause there I am... trying to shed those darn shoes cause all I was worried about was the christmas puddings that where in the bloody combi.
Water was all over the floor, my lunch was getting cold and the shoes are hurting me.
So here is my advice on how to survive Thursdays:
Don't try to wear the pointy high shoes, even if it's only for a laugh.
Get your lunch as early as you can.
Make sure all connections to the combi are secure.
Get some wellington boots.

The kitchen floor is now very clean.

Coffee, meat, ghosts

Ahh.. the coffee at Copper, be glad that you don't get the stuff we make for ourselves, notice the bumper sized can of instant coffee in the background, it's amazing how quickly we can go through the stuff.
I like mine made with hot milk, 3.5 sugars & 2 coffees - Neil, 1.5 sugars & 2 coffees.
what's with the .5 sugar business. Get a life and make it with a round number of sugars is what I think.
Anyways... I am still not able to eat meat in it's proper form since the quail incident (got quail as a treat for lunch and just saw 2 little birds with broken necks)... if it's been mashed up (sausage or burger) then I can fool myself! but not when it's identifiable as meat!!
Well since then I have been getting a sore tummy, Neil says it's because I am dying from lack of meat. Tonight he was feeding me pheasant sausage and when I said I didn't want anymore he got thick & has informed me of his intention to relinquish my title of head food taster (oh the quality control jobs are always the most tedious) he reckons my taste buds have gone on holiday!
Well back to the plot... there is a job going of head food taster cause I may die of lack of meat, or the more likely, Neil is going to put me under the patio!
I will then be a ghost, for almost the 2nd time today,

Ah yes, it had to happen sometime.... the Christmas menu for 2006 is now ready. I don't want to talk about it, the production of this menu has been an arduous journey for all involved but at least the web page isn't too tacky (despite my best efforts).
Actually I do want to talk about it now, toffee apple crumble... I can't hardly wait to taste it but I have another 2 months & a week to wait yet.
I asked Neil if he wanted to say anything, he said no, but he is smiling.
Right I'm away to print up a load of menus for you lot to come and take away then I will go and check that the fruit for the Christmas puddings is drowing in the brandy nicely.

It's getting to that time of year again.... end of May, sun starting to shine, less clothes being worn and legs the colour of milk bottles,
Blues on the Bay weekend!!

We will of course be doing our famous 6 oysters & Guinness (or other drink) for £7.50 to keep you sustained throughout the weekend, that beats some nasty old fast food joint! ummmm what would you rather, stand out on the street eating nasties or be in the lovelyness of Copper with the Copper babes waiting on you?

On the Thursday there will be some great blues being played in Copper, we will have Kenny McDowell & Ronnie Greer playing from 7pm! For the evening you have loads of options to chose from, come in before 7pm and you can order from the early evening menu, the A La Carte menu or just relax with some oysters & Guinness at the bar, after 7pm bye bye early evening menu.

On Friday evening we will be offering our early evening menu up till 7pm, after that we are into the award winning, supreme value for money A La Carte menu till 10.30

Saturday, we can't improve on so we kept it the way it is.

Sunday lunch which runs from 12-3 has loads of availability yet but Sunday evening which runs from 5.30-9.30 is starting to fill up! It may have something to do with Van Morrison playing his 2 gigs in Warrenpoint town hall that day. If you are going to the concert and want to eat in the best place for miles around give us a ring on 028 417 53047 before there's no room left!

Remeber there are 2 menus to chose from, the early evening menu or the A La Carte menu.

I have typed this post & deleted it 3, no 4 times now and all cause , and that man was still ...... to me but I think that a moment of delete now will save me endless heartache over the next week! So I've said my piece. SHAMS..............

Anyway what I really was going to say only got interrupted by that phone call was.... If you notice that we start to drool when you ask us what we would recommend on the menu its cause so far we have had a whole dessert plate, the soup, blue cheese butter, rissotto and some duck terrine tastings from the new menu and the more we taste the harder the decision is which is the best. Its a hard life being the Copper food tasters you know, even the Adrian profiteroles had to be tasted again just to be sure there was just the right amount of chocolate sauce on them, and as Adrian has proved, if you are lovely then your dessert will make it to the menu!

And the winner of the March free meal for two & a bottle of wine is..... I don't know yet! you will get your emails on Tuesday!! I can be soooo evil sometimes its great.

Has any one else noticed that on average people are becoming more rude or is it just us? And that so few have any kind of sense of humour any more! Please, get over your selves and find a big balloon or go on a diet (that's me being smart, do you get it?)
If I have to do a "don't annoy the waiting staff" post again there will be trouble!

Oh yes it happened... we had the rudest customer ever! well the rudest that got to enjoy all Copper Restaurants fine food and excellent service and not be asked to leave. Now this customer will be referred to as "it" to protect the innocent. What happened to this person before it entered the restaurant (like its whole life..... was it dropped on its head at a young age or just a product of bad genetic code?) we don't know but it was confrontational from the moment it walked in through the door. OMG why did it think that it could be rude like that.... Anyway, don't do it again cause we have a plan of action for its kind and it ain't nice!

Yeah.... even though it was a very cold day in Warrenpoint ( it snowed as well ) and the place was like a ghost town after 6pm we still managed to raise over £150 for AMH New Horizons Newry, that's a lot of Coppers.

Now, since I've stopped smoking I've become a major grinch (calming down now!) and things that I used to laugh at (I'm starting to laugh again) while the other waiting staff were pulling their hair out no longer makes me laugh(oh but it does), I'm also going bald.
So we have decided to let you all know what makes us blush due to embarrassment & anger so you can either not do it or help us out by laughing when you see some one else do it, that helps us calm down. (bear in mind that other things my come up on this list and disappear again depending on, lunar cycle, calorie intake within the last four hours, condition of kitchen humor etc.) So from the Copper Staff to you.... Ok, after much debate here is our top of the embarrassment/anger list:
1. Who gets to pay the bill.
Don't argue with each other over who is going to pay the bill in front of your server! Its rude, it is soooo rude that we have made a sign that hides behind the till until needed.

2. Please don't ignore your server.
We only come to the table to serve you e.g, tell you some things or take an order not to annoy you, please pay attention, it's sad when we have to stand over you and treat you like children just to get your attention, this applies especially to big tables where there is always one person who talks over the top of the server then demands to know why they didn't get told what the fish of the day was (you did, you didn't listen) didn't get another drink at the same time as the rest of the party (you were asked did you want one 3 times but never answered) and most importantly for our temper control, really you need to let us know if you have a problem or would like something else when we ask you, not when we are taking the order for the table across the restaurant from you.

3. Napkins.
Ahhhhh, place them on your lap when you sit down.

4. The menu is a complete list of the stuff we have.
If we were ever to have burgers/pizza/onion rings/pepper sauce/melon balls/jelly/pavolva/tinned fruit it would be on the menu, we don't really mind that some people read the menu in the window come in and ask is that the menu to be told yes, but when they sit down and read the menu again then ask for stuff we don't have and complain, we get angry!

6. Cancellation of bookings.
Ring us... 028 417 53047. Let us know you aren't coming, we get the restaurant all ready for you to come and see us, tables dressed, wine chilled etc, we tell the others that we are fully booked and feel for them when they tell us how they were meant to come in on Tuesday and book but forgot and lied to the other half that they did book the table ( this happens more than you would believe) So its Saturday night and we have turned away maybe 4 tables and there it is..... Poor little table, born to feel elbows, warm plates of food, lovely full glasses but no... It will remain lonely, nothing to support, it feels no warmth, no love and why? Cause no one let us know that it wasn't wanted. Then the trouble starts, picture the scene....
Phone rings
Us: Good afternoon Copper restaurant.
You: Could I book a table for Saturday night please.
Us: I'm sorry we are fully booked for Saturday night, can I take your details and if a table becomes free we will give you a call!
You: Ok, (you give details) please I really need a table I kind of already said I had one booked, its our anniversary/ birthday etc. What ever you can do, just sit us anywhere please.
Us: We will do our very best!
End of call
Now its 9pm Saturday night, the kitchen is sitting at a cozy 26 degrees, Neil is still cool but on the floor there is a problem.
Table 3 were meant to be here half an hour ago and they ain't answering their phone, are they on their way, we will hold the table for another 15mins. Times up for table 3 so we try ringing the anniversary/birthday contact details, no answer... now two senarios can occur, the first is that we give the table to the first walk in, cool table filled.
the second is that no one walks in for the table which is more likely as its now 9.30pm.
So Tuesday we get a strange phone call from birthday/anniversary demanding to know why
1. They were told we were fully booked when their friend just walked in off the street and got a table!
2. They heard from a friend that there was a table empty all night so why couldn't they have it?
In both cases its not good. See what happens just because you didn't ring to cancel, you evil person you.

Ah ha...... our cunning yet devious plan for world domination is at last coming to fruition NOT!!!!! Yes the nicotine cravings are going and the funnies are coming back but OMG we now have customers doing all the bold things on our list just for the crack.... Yes you know who you are Friday night table of 5, see if you are going to break our unwritten rules you have to do it in style like these guys did, make us laugh, not cry!

Well!! Hope you all had a great Christmas & New year! As you can see we have been so busy that I haven't been able to make any little posts, and I'm telling you the things which we witnessed over the festive period, I should've been up in the office every night typing my heart out! Anyway it's all over now for another year so it's now time to start getting back to the more mundane things involved in running a restaurant like invoices and so on. But before I return to all that its update time.

The monthly draw hasn't happened yet as there is a massive problem between my email & internet security programs which is kind of easy to fix but since I've given up smoking I can't concentrate on anything. It will be happening in the next few days.

As of Monday 16th January we will be closed on a Monday, Neil & myself are getting too old for all this 7 days, 90+ hours a week thing so we agreed to close Mondays! Sorry to the Monday club, you'll have to find a new day!!

We have a January sale on at the moment kind of thing, the lunch menu is available in the evening from 5.30-7pm Tue-Thurs.

I sent my letter to Santa today after one of our younger customers pointed out that its no wonder I don't get any Christmas presents as you have to write to Santa!
I didn't ask for anything solid!! No rude comments please!! I mean I didn't ask for material things, I didn't see the point, I'm less than poor and getting used to it and who ever said that the best way to make a £1million running a restaurant was to start with £2million was a liar, its more like £3million. Oh and it looks like the girls got their Christmas wish early, look at how much content I've put up here tonight & it a Tuesday!
Is there an age limit to asking Santa for stuff, if there is I'm kinda in trouble cause I signed it Sarah, age 31 & 3/4
